Tips for choosing the right tablet for your needs

These tips are in the form of questions that you should really be asking yourself. A lot of people are caught up in the marketing of tablets, without actually wanting or needing one. Most tablet devices in American homes are acting as very expensive dust collectors. When you are looking to buy a tablet, ask yourself these questions.

Do you want a tablet to play with?

This does not mean, you want a tablet to play games on, it means have you seen the adverts and seen other people using one and you want one yourself. Have you retroactively justified it to yourself? Have you secretly decided you wanted one and then convinced yourself that you need one because it does this or that?

If this may be the case, then find a friend and borrow his or her tablet for a week. Tell them that you need it for some sort of graphic design project (or some more convincing lie). They will probably have it stuffed in a drawer at home so they will not miss it. Use it for a week, and if you get tired of playing with it, you may save yourself the expense of buying it.

Do you want an e-reader?

Having a tablet device that is easy to read from may actually be a benefit. This is more for people who have gotten their hands on some good online PDFs, but do not want to print them off to read them. They could read them on the screen, but it is always harder on the eyes. Plus, for some reason if you read something on a desktop computer for too long, you find yourself getting distracted. A tablet that acts as an e-reader may help you to get around this problem.

If you do just need an e-reader, then buy just that. Do not but a fully functional tablet because you will not use it to its full potential. There are lots of e-readers that are just for reading. They are cheaper and will probably suit you perfectly.

Do you want a tablet for the sake of having a tablet?

If you buy a car then you buy it to get to work or to the shops. If you buy a TV it is so you can watch Judge Judy and cheer when she shouts. When you buy a gun you do it because you do not feel like much of a man. When you buy 70cl of makeup you do it because you are ugly. So why are you buying a tablet? Do you have a legitimate and sure reason for buying it?

Do you want to play games on your tablet?

This is going to influence your buying decision because some handle games better than others. Some games are available for one operating system and not another. You will need to do deeper research into the capabilities of each device if you want to play games. Look into the newer Samsung models if you are looking for a place to start.

Do you have big hands or small hands?

It is harder to hold the bigger devices if you only have smaller hands. The 7 inch screen ones may not look very big, but they are easier to hold if you have smaller hands.

Do you want to hold it for long periods?

This is where the weight comes into play. A heavier device is harder to hold, so if you are buying a tablet primarily for reading, then a lighter one is better.

Do you want to keep it at home all the time?

If this is the case then a cheaper tablet will suit you fine. The cheaper tablets are more likely to get chipped and scraped, but if you are not taking it onto a busy train or onto a busy campus then a cheaper model will suit you fine.

Do you have the money to spare?

They are very expensive, so you will need to consider the fact that you will have to spend a lot of money on your tablet. Have you considered buying a second hand tablet?

Do you have to have the most expensive version?

It will make you look cool in front of the other 13 year olds, but in a year you are going to be the person with the old version.
