SEO - Meta title tags - title, keywords and description

Some of us invest a lot of time researching and writing an article. When it comes to publishing the article, we (specially me) feel lazy writing good metas like title, keywords and description. Most important metas are title and description as they are picked up by search engines and used when displaying search results.

A main keyword in meta title, keywords and description will boost your page ranking value (if it also exists atleast once in h1 tag and body of the post). The approximate characters limit for meta tags are as below:

Meta title:

60 to 70 characters including spaces. Its recommended to stay with lower value which is 60 characters. You can have a strong and appealing sentence using keyword of that length. It's usually recommended to match the h1 tag and meta title as much as possible.

Meta description:

150 to 160 characters including spaces. It's recommended to stick with lower character limit for meta description as well. As you have more character limit in description than that in title, you can summarize your post here but make it so that people feel like clicking on that search result and land on your web page.

Meta keywords:

814 characters including spaces. Recommended to be around 10-20 words only. The value of meta keywords is now decreasing, as search engines have started to ignore your meta keywords tag. Still there are some search engines who still consider your meta keywords. So, it's better to collect some high performing and related keywords and add it on this meta tag.

Sample meta tags looks like this:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:og="http://opengraphprotocol.org/schema/" xmlns:fb="http://ogp.me/ns/fb#" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
    <head profile="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11">
        <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
        <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/>
        <title>SEO - Meta title tags - title, keywords and description</title>
        <meta name="description" content="Some seo useful tips about meta title, keywords and description with max characters allowed and recommended.">
        <meta name="keywords" content="Seo, Meta, Title, Keywords, Description, Max Characters, Recommeded Meta, Tips, Suggestions">
    </head>

Meta keywords are not used by Google bots so it's not worth to take care of it.
