iWeb was Apple's attempt to make it big in the self-publishing realm. The simple web development tool that offered a number of options for users to publish their on site online was released along with the iLife suite in the year 2006. Just like Blogger and WordPress, iWeb allowed users to create and publish their websites and blogs over the internet and further personalize them by adding images, videos, themes and integrate with social media. But unfortunately, the service was called off in the year 2011, when the company decided to shut down the services and offer its users some time to migrate from MobileMe to another hosting service. But the thing is, iWeb is still active and it is the MobileMe that has been shut down. Users can still create websites with iWeb and publish them online. So, for those of you who use the iWeb application and want to publish your content over the web through other resources, here are some tips and tricks.

The Migration:

On June 30 2012, Apple discontinued the services and every single website that was published on MobileMe was deleted, resulting in loss of data unless the users migrated to a different host. But that doesn't mean the users of iWeb can no longer publish their content online. With a simple (and pretty popular) trick, users can upload their content in a jiffy. The process may be called as Upload through FTP and to do this the users have to just make sure that they have the most recent version of iWeb.

Getting Started to Publishing to an FTP Server:

  1. Open the iWeb program and choose the website you wish to publish from the left portion of the application
  2. A window bearing questions on various user information will appear on selecting the preferred website. The information it requests for includes the option to publish over FTP or local folder, the name of the website, contact email (optional), server ID, username & password and link of the website.
  3. Select the option 'Publish to FTP' and key-in the necessary information. While typing-iin the server address, make sure that you include the word 'ftp' before the name of your domain.
  4. Also, in the tab that requests information on the path or directory, try out with the two following options. First give it a try with a simple 'slash' (/), then try it by specifying the name of your domain enclosed within two slashes on either side. The reason we do this is to learn the functionality of the server. Some servers require just the inclusion of /, while others have a folder in the name of public_php enclosed within two slashes. In that case follow the latter procedure
  5. Select the 'Publish Site' Option.
  6. Apart from this, iWeb even allows users to publish their content over a local folder within their computers and upload them via third party FTP applications
  7. To do this, users have to open the iWeb program and select 'Local Folder' in the 'Publish To' option
  8. Next, specify the drive or a destination folder where they wish to publish their content and select the option 'Publish Site'

Users who do not possess the latest version of iWeb cannot perform the above mentioned procedure, because the older iWeb program is devoid of a 'Publish to FTP' option. So, users have to initially publish to a local folder and get a little assistance from FTP clients and publish their content to their FTP server.

Though a simple task to execute, the program does throw up some errors and issues amidst the upload process! The issue may range from being as simple as login error to as complicated as connecting to the server. While login errors need a little more attention while keying in, errors related to connectivity need a deeper insight.

So, these were some of the tips to publish a website via the FTP. Hope this was helpful!
